The idea to publish an illustrated textbook on wound management was brought to the fore at the wound care conference in Nairobi in the year 2018. The main purpose was to develop a book that is intended for the wound care specialists and doctors who, in their daily routine, handle patients with wounds in a setup of limited resources.
This book addresses all aspects of wounds from wound patho-physiology, classification, dressings and ultimately wound closure. Each chapter has illustrations, tables and pictures that make it easy for one to read and understand the various principles of wound management. It is the hope of the authors that by reading this book your knowledge and skills on wound management will be enriched making one comfortable when handling and managing a majority of wounds.

The Adventist University of Central Africa: Beauty Out of Ashes

The book is talking about an Adventist institution of higher education that was born, grew, rose to greatness, then fell, closed, reborn, and is now at the top.

Founded by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church through the Trans-Africa Division, Adventist University of Central Africa had promising beginnings at Mudende, Rwanda in Central Africa. Unfortunately, its rapid progress was of a short duration (1984 – 1994: ten years) because it was followed by a free fall led unavoidably to its closure.

After a long and difficult history of surmounting seemingly impossible difficulties (1994 – 1996: 2 years), the university took root at Gishushu, Kigali, Rwanda. After narrowly escaping closure, AUCA at Gishushu was allowed to continue its activities by Dr. Humberto Rasi, Director of Education of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

From being surely the smallest of the Adventist campuses, unworthy of hosting so much as a kindergarten, it now hosts on of AUCA’s most modern buildings and has expanded to a second campus.

Dr. Rasi’s blessing, Roy Ryan’s prophetic word, the Presidential gift of paving the AUCA’s road, the prayers and dedication of those who have guided the university over the years, and the blessings of God, have enabled AUCA to overcome all obstacles and receive an invitation from Government of Rwanda to open a new medical school, which has now been established as the seventh such institution owned and operated by Seventh-day Adventist and the second in Africa.

The book is addressed to all Adventist believers in general and to leaders of Adventist institutions of higher education in particular. Through the book, the author would like to emphasize the promise of God as it is written in Zechariah 4:6. However great the difficulties will be on our path, we are assured by this promise: “For is not by mighty or by power, but by my spirit, says the LORD of hosts”.

Incorporating the latest digital technology into traditional language teaching systems has opened up a wealth of multimedia and interactive applications available to bring teaching methods into the 21st century. In the last 10 years, the world has experienced a sudden increase of technology, and this has had a lot of impact in the teaching of foreign languages. Learners interact with foreign language content through internet and social media, and through digital devices such as smartphones and computers. The chapters in this book discuss how lecturers in Universitis in Kenya use Technology to motivate the learning of French as a foreign language (FFL). The discourses in the chapters specifically focus on lecturers and students, who frequently use technology in their classroom to support FFL learning in universities in Kenya. Findings illustrate the potential of technology integration in French classrooms for supporting students’ French language learning in Technical University of Kenya. The attitude towards learning the language has changed; the learners enjoy being in a French classroom when a digital device is incorporated in the lesson.

Research publishing Dictionary

Dictionaries occupy a unique niche in research publishing-just like they do in all other disciplines, in that they define concepts as used at various times. Their writing demands a thorough and extensive study of a wide range of concepts, terms, and expressions as used at the time of writing. At a time we witness knowledge explosion, thanks to Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), we expect that what we previously referred to as knowledge has changed significantly: some concepts might disappear from our use, some will expand their references, and some might narrow their scopes of reference. With technological changes also comes our approach to epistemology: how we define knowledge, what we teach, and how we teach must change to be in tandem with the changing knowledge infrastructure. This dictionary came as a result of three considerations: the ever expanding graduate education in Kenya, the necessity of graduate research publishing as part of the requirement for the conferment of graduate degrees, and a recognition that technological changes have affected, in more than one way, what we refer to as knowledge. Thirty years ago, we had less than six universities in Kenya but the number of universities has grown exponentially. Alongside their growth is expansion of their programmes which includes the introduction of graduate studies. All graduate programmes in Kenya have research components part of which is that students should publish their research with peer refereed journals before they graduate. Finally, knowledge bases have shifted following the rapid changes occasioned by globalization and Information Communication Technology. We observe that these three motivations underlie the need for continuous publication of books, dictionaries, and other publications. The writing of this dictionary was done by a wide literature review of what were considered important words and expressions in research publishing. The researchers collected a wide range of these and then the whole list was put together for further analysis to agree if such terms and expressions needed to be included in the dictionary. The process profited a lot since each of the authors comes from a different academic orientation and specialization. An agreement was made on which terms would make it to the final manuscript, the substance of which is presented herein. We, however, state that this is not an all-encompassing dictionary in research publishing. The expressions we chose to present are those we considered core and urgent since our supervision of research publishing indicates that some terms present challenges in their use. We therefore hope that this dictionary will spur interest among fellow researchers to engage in describing important terms in their areas of specialization. Since knowledge keeps evolving, we will be looking forward to a second, and possibly, a third edition of this dictionary, which will include expressions we thought are obvious, but which readers might wish were included. We hope that our audience will be free to point out what will be necessary and critical to include in subsequent editions. The dictionary is organized in alphabetical order with a bibliography at the end, i.e. a list of the publications that the authors reviewed to pick, read, and understand the various expressions. We use the term bibliography since the terms are explained from a wide understanding based on our research experience and from what fellow scholars think those terms mean.

Literary theory/ criticism is an umbrella term that encompasses all the literary theories. Literary criticism is basically the study, evaluation, interpretation of literature from various perspective altogether. Different Literary Theories are like lenses that aid and help the critics to study a particular text with the application of a particular theory. In a nutshell, we can say that theories act like lenses that helps us to dig deeper into the nitty gritties of a particular piece of writing. Literary theories are considered as a means to understand the different ways in which people read and interpret various texts. In other words, we can say that literary theory is the act of applying various ideas and methods while reading any piece of literature. Interpretation of a particular text with respect to literary theories provide a different understanding and different interpretation. We are able to read a text from an entirely different point of view. This is the beauty of reading a text when literary theory is applied on this. Literary theory also acts as different tools when attempting to understand any text of literature. Different theories applied to different texts from different contributors have been taken into consideration in this book.
